Craig Bruno, who coached Bunnell to state titles in 2006 and 2007, has been named the next coach at Naugatuck. The news was first reported by the CT POST on Thursday.

From the POST article:

Bruno, 44, played at Bunnell in the 1980s and was elevated to head coach in 2001 to replace his mentor, Bob Mastroni.

Bruno will leave as its most decorated after 12 years, four state playoff appearances and two state championships.

Bruno, who is also the athletic director at Bassick, takes over at Naugatuck after a tumultuous 2012, which saw the school embroiled in a recruiting scandal involving former coach Rob Plasky and Sacred Heart receiver David Coggins. Plasky resigned in August. The Greyhounds went 6-4 under interim coach Shawn Kuczenski.

Naugatuck was fined $7,500 and put on probation for two years for recruiting violations, the CIAC announced Thursday. Naugatuck wasn't named in the report, listed only as "offending member school".

The CIAC also ruled that three student-athletes, David Coggins, Javon Martin and Xavier Woods, are required to sit-out this season's first four games. The three were also not named in the report.

Naugatuck coach Rob Plasky resigned following allegations that he tried to recruit the three players from Sacred Heart High to attend Naugatuck.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Board
of Control held its second meeting of the 2012-13 school year Thursday
afternoon.

On the agenda were three voting items for the Board based on self-reports
of CIAC violations received from CIAC member institutions.

* The Board considered a self-report and investigative report of
violations CIAC Recruitment Rules in the sport of football. Three instances
of recruitment violations were included as part of the self-report. The
board unanimously voted to fine the offending member school $7,500.00,
place the football program on two-year probation (a period of trial during
which the school is monitored to determine compliance with the requirements
of CIAC regulations) as of September 20, 2012, and require the school to
follow its own recommendations to establish guidelines for booster club
activities and bring the booster club programs within the school's
jurisdiction.

* The Board discussed the eligibility of three students involved in the
recruiting situation described in the self-report. The Board approved a
motion requiring the three students involved in the self-report sit out the
first four games of the varsity season.

* The Board examined a self-report and investigative report of violations
of CIAC Out-of-Season Coaching Rules from a member school baseball program.
The self-report found violations from 2009 and stated that the school is
planning to require all coaches are aware of CIAC rules and take the CIAC
coach training modules. The board approved a motion of a $750 fine for the
member school, a two-year probation for the baseball program, and a
requirement that the school follow its own recommendations regarding
coaching training.

* The Board also discussed several issues including possible changes in
the out-of-season coaching rules which came at the request of the
Connecticut High School Coaches Association and Connecticut Association of
Athletics Directors.  The request is to see if there are ways to loosen the
restrictions on out-of-season coaching, but remains only in the discussion
stage at this point.

* The Board also provided some information on changes in reporting from
the Annual Enrollment forms that member schools submit as part of the work
of a CIAC sub-committee studying possible changes in the use of the
multiplier for tournament placement.

* The chair of the Eligibility Committee reported that the committee heard
nine appeals at its meeting earlier Thursday. Two waivers were granted -
one on an eight-semester case and the other on a transfer. The remaining
seven appeals were denied.

* The board heard reports on various topics from CIAC staff and
representatives of outside organizations.

The Board of Control will meet again on Thursday, October 18.

The investigation into whether or not Naugatuck committed recruiting violations has been completed, according to the the NVL Blog. The Blog summarizes the report.

The NVL Blog reported that David Coggins and Javon Martin have re-enrolled at Sacred Heart, although their eligibility has yet to be determined.

The Waterbury Rep-Am's Kyle Brennan also wrote an article on where the investigation stands.


According to the article:

Depending on the findings, the CIAC could impose a number of penalties, including a fine of up to $10,000, probation, a postseason ban or the suspension of Naugatuck's athletics program.

It's unclear when the CIAC would make a decision, although CIAC Executive Director Karissa Niehoff said last week there should be a "quick" decision. The Board of Control will meet Sept. 20, a day before Naugy's second game against Derby.

Naugatuck football coach Rob Plasky resigned Friday, a day after being suspended for his alleged involvement in the recruitment of two players who wished to transfer to the school from Sacred Heart High.

The Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, the governing body of high school sports in this state, said it is aware of the situation in response to an email from the Register:

“The CIAC has been notified by Naugatuck High School of a potential recruiting violation. The school will be submitting a report to the CIAC Board of Control. When the report is received it will be reviewed and acted upon. Prior to the report being received it would be inappropriate to comment on what action could be taken.”

Naugatuck coach Rob Plasky has resigned Friday.

Rob Plasky, head football coach at Naugatuck High School, has submitted a letter of resignation in the face of an investigation into possible violations of Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference violations, according to Principal Jan Saam.

This would have been Plasky's twelfth season coaching the Greyhounds.

Saam declined to disclose which conference rules might have been violated, citing the ongoing investigation, which is being handled by borough Attorney Ned Fitzpatrick.

Naugatuck High School football coach Rob Plasky is on paid leave as borough officials investigate whether he violated CIAC rules by giving money to the mother of standout players who wanted to transfer to Naugy.

Plasky, a 42-year-old Naugy alum who has been head coach at NHS since 2001, is alleged to have given $2,000 to a mother who complained of trouble paying bills. Sources identified the woman as Meme Martin, the mother of quarterback Javon Martin and legal guardian of David Coggins, a wide receiver who has verbally committed to Div. 1 football power Boston College. Both players wanted to transfer to Naugy for their senior years from Sacred Heart in Waterbury, where they excelled on the gridiron for three years.

While it is unclear what the money went toward, the Republican-American of Waterbury posted a blog on Tuesday stating the academic transcripts of Martin and Coggins are being withheld by Sacred Heart because part of the tuition for both had not been paid.

Reached by phone Thursday evening, Plasky said he could not discuss the issue.

Took a few weeks off this summer but now, as my fifth grade teacher used to remind  us during the first few weeks back that school year, it's time to clean the sand from my ears, put away the flip flops and get back to work.

The 2012 High School Football Season officially begins with the start of conditioning this week.

Our friends from the NVL blog reported that Sacred Heart WR David Coggins, who committed to play at Boston College, transferred to Naugatuck, and that Pat Russo is OUT as head coach at Wilby. Read about these stories here.

Starting on Tuesday at this blog, I'll begin to preview the 2012 season with my What To Look For (W2L4) feature. I'll give you some information about teams, leagues, players and games to watch this year.

Several Milford Academy football players, including former Ansonia standout Montrell Dobbs, recently decided on their college destinations.

Dobbs, a running back and the 2010 Register All-State player of the year, will attend Temple, Milford Academy coach Bill Chaplick confirmed Wednesday.

In his one season with the Falcons, Dobbs, finished the year with a team leading 20 touchdowns and 1,366 yards and became the school’s second leader rusher all-time.

Dobbs originally planned to attend UConn but did not meet the academic requirements. Dobbs then briefly considered playing at Marshall.

Temple is coached by former Cheshire High coach Steve Addazio.

“Playing for coach Addazio is going to be great for him (Dobbs),” Chaplick said.

Dobbs will enroll at the Philadelphia school on Tuesday.

Former Milford Academy running back Matt Brown will be a senior at Temple in the fall.
Running back Bernard Pierce recently decided to forego his senior season with the Owls to enter the NFL draft.

“It’s a perfect situation for (Dobbs),” Chaplick said. “By the time he settles in down there, he’ll have the chance to be the man.”

Former St. Joseph standout Tyler Matakevich, a linebacker and Dobbs’ roommate at Milford Academy, has also committed to play at Temple.

“They both had a great year with me,” Chaplick said. “All their hard work has really paid off.”

Three other Milford Academy players from this area also made their choice.

Quarterback Erich Berzinskas, a former standout at Morgan, reported this past Sunday to Purdue, while North Haven’s Eddie Glenn and Naugatuck’s Aaron Echevarria will both play at Southern Connecticut State.

Quarterback Erich Berzinskas, a former standout at Morgan, reported Sunday to Purdue University. Erich led the Falcons to its first undefeated football season, orchestrating fourth quarter come-from-behind wins against Lehigh University and Army Prep.

Tyler Matakevich, a former Register All-State selection at St. Joseph, reports next week to Temple University. Tyler was the Falcons leading tackler and team captain, amassing 104 tackles, 48 solo tackles, 21 TFLs, 2 INTs, 1 Pass Deflection and 6 Sacks. Tyler will be playing for Coach Steve Addazio, former Head Coach at Cheshire High School and Offensive Coordinator for the University of Florida Gators.

North Haven's Eddie Glenn and Naugatuck's Aaron Echevarria both report to Southern Connecticut University within the next weeks. Eddie and Aaron were both consistent starters for the Falcons.

There are 14 CT players on the Milford Academy roster. Milford Academy is a prep school located in New Berlin, N.Y. Milford Academy has opened the season with three straight wins.

Most notable on the roster is former Ansonia standout Montrell Dobbs, the 2010 Register state player of the year. In the first game, Dobbs rushed for 97 yards on 14 carries and caught two passes for 47 yards. In Game 2, he rushed four times for 14 yards and one touchdown. In Game 3, he had 10 carries for 45 yards.

"He works real hard," Milford Academy coach Bill Chaplick said. "He reminds me of (former Milford Academy player) Graig Cooper, who played at the University of Miami and is now at the (Philadelphia) Eagles camp. He (Dobbs) is a north-south downhill runner. So far he's been really good."

Another Ansonia product, defensive end Bobby Kinnebrew, is also on the roster. Kinnebrew took a year off from school and football but has been impressive, Chaplick said.

"He's been a surprise," Chaplick said. "He's been out of school and football but he's trying to get a scholarship."

Former Morgan quarterback Erich Berzinskas led the team on a 96-yard drive that covered 56 seconds and capped it with a 15-yard touchdown pass with six seconds remaining in the victory over Lehigh, which was Chaplick's 100th victory with the school. In 12 years, Chaplick is 100-31.

Berzinskas is expected to make an official visit to Iowa soon.

North Haven's Ed Glenn, a defensive lineman, linebacker Tyler Matakevich, out of St. Joseph, Naugatuck offensive lineman Aaron Echevarria and wide receiver Marc Desruisseaux of Stratford have also contributed.

Chaplick said Glennn has positioned himself to be a Division I player.

"When they see the film of him (Glenn)," Chaplick said, "they're going to be all over him. He has a great body, works hard and is totally coachable."

Ansonia running back Montrell Dobbs, the Register's All-State Most Valuable Player, has officially been accepted to play football next fall at Milford Academy, a prep school in New Berlin. N.Y.

Dobbs rushed for 3,445 yards and 45 touchdowns as a senior, while leading the Chargers to an 11-2 record and an appearance in the Class S state championship game.

Also headed to Milford Academy, which is coached by Ansonia native Bill Chaplick, is Naugatuck defensive back Ruben Berger, North Haven defensive end Ed Glenn and Ledyard lineman Desmond Gray.

Senior quarterback Erich Broadrick ran for two touchdowns and passed for three to lead the Naugatuck football team to a 38-20 Naugatuck Valley League interdivision victory over host Ansonia Thursday before an estimated 4,000 at Jarvis Stadium.

The win clinched the NVL title and secured a Class L state playoff berth for the Greyhounds (9-1). Naugatuck now trails in the annual Thanksgiving Day series 66-35-11. It was the first win for the Greyhounds over the Chargers since 2001, which marked the last time Naugatuck captured the NVL title.

Broadrick scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 6 yards, and completed 12 of 19 passes for 215 yards. Broadrick connected twice with senior Tyler Conklin on touchdown passes and once with senior Irman Farimani.

Naugatuck led 17-14 at halftime after a 31-yard field goal from Mick Pernell.
Arkeel Newsome scored on a 9-yard run, Montrell Dobbs on a 2-yard run, and Andrew Matos caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Elliott Chudwick for Ansonia (9-1), which is ranked sixth in the Register Top 10 Poll. Dobbs carried 26 times for 114 yards.

Ansonia also qualified for the playoffs. The Chargers will be the third seed in Class S.

Pre-sale tickets for the Naugatuck at Ansonia Thanksgiving Day football game will be available starting next Wednesday (Nov. 17) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ansonia High School.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for high school students and $2 for seniors and students in grades five through eighth.

All tickets are $5 at the gate. Kickoff is set for 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 25.

Chris Ballas rushed 21 times for 124 yards and three rushing touchdowns to lead the Law football teams to a 33-7 Southern Connecticut Conference interdivision win over visiting Fairfield Prep Friday at Milford.

Ballas also caught a touchdown pass from Corey Vieanneau. Nick Boyd scored on a 29-yard fumble recovery for the Lawmen (2-1).


Derby/O’Brien Tech 20, Naugatuck 14 (OT): Ray Kreiger scored on a 1-yard run in overtime to lift the visiting Red Raiders to a Naugatuck Valley League win.

D’Don Conyers scored on a 90-yard run, and Jake Tomczak scored on an 80-yard run for Derby/O’Brien Tech (2-1), which trailed 14-0 after one quarter.

Tyler Conklin and Dashawn Wingate scored rushing touchdowns for the Greyhounds (2-1).


Hyde 49, Valley Regional/Old Lyme 7: Joe Lambert scored on a 68-yard run, a 37-yard fumble recovery and a 78-yard kickoff return to lead the visiting Howling Wolves to a Pequot Conference win at Deep River.


Holy Cross 21, Ansonia 13: Ryan Kalnins returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown to seal the deal in the Crusaders’ victory at Municipal Stadium. Holy Cross is 3-0.

Montrell Dobbs scored twice for No. 5 Ansonia (2-1) — on a 73-yard run and a 45-yard interception return.
