Cromwell 17, Hyde 14
Unbeaten Cromwell (8-0) survived a late fourth-quarter rally by Hyde to prevail in a Pequot Conference Sassacus Division game.
Hyde drove 43 yards to the Cromwell 29 and were faced with a 4th and 1 with 32 seconds left in regulation. However, unaware it was fourth down, and without any timeouts remaining, Howling Wolves’ quarterback Kendell Groom spiked the ball, which essentially ended any Hyde hopes.
Cromwell took over on downs and needed just one play to run out the clock.
Hyde trailed 17-7 but cut the lead to three on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Justen Wilson, followed by the extra point from junior DeShawn Murphy, with 10:46 left in the fourth quarter.
Cromwell scored on its first possession, a 14-play, 67-yard drive that took 5:28, capped off on a 1-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Bobby Jordan.
Hyde answered with 2:01 left in the first quarter when senior Saladin Hason scored on a 43-yard run.
Kevin Molde kicked a 22-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Sophomore Josiah Simons caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jordan in the third quarter, which ended up being the deciding score.
