Ansonia's Dobbs headed to Temple

Several Milford Academy football players, including former Ansonia standout Montrell Dobbs, recently decided on their college destinations.

Dobbs, a running back and the 2010 Register All-State player of the year, will attend Temple, Milford Academy coach Bill Chaplick confirmed Wednesday.

In his one season with the Falcons, Dobbs, finished the year with a team leading 20 touchdowns and 1,366 yards and became the school’s second leader rusher all-time.

Dobbs originally planned to attend UConn but did not meet the academic requirements. Dobbs then briefly considered playing at Marshall.

Temple is coached by former Cheshire High coach Steve Addazio.

“Playing for coach Addazio is going to be great for him (Dobbs),” Chaplick said.

Dobbs will enroll at the Philadelphia school on Tuesday.

Former Milford Academy running back Matt Brown will be a senior at Temple in the fall.
Running back Bernard Pierce recently decided to forego his senior season with the Owls to enter the NFL draft.

“It’s a perfect situation for (Dobbs),” Chaplick said. “By the time he settles in down there, he’ll have the chance to be the man.”

Former St. Joseph standout Tyler Matakevich, a linebacker and Dobbs’ roommate at Milford Academy, has also committed to play at Temple.

“They both had a great year with me,” Chaplick said. “All their hard work has really paid off.”

Three other Milford Academy players from this area also made their choice.

Quarterback Erich Berzinskas, a former standout at Morgan, reported this past Sunday to Purdue, while North Haven’s Eddie Glenn and Naugatuck’s Aaron Echevarria will both play at Southern Connecticut State.

Murphy impressed with local players

Masuk's John Murphy, the Team CT coach for the 13th Governors Cup (June 25, 4:30 p.m. at Southington High) was impressed with several New Haven area standouts on the roster.

Murphy on Ansonia RB Montrell Dobbs, the 2010 Register State and Area MVP:

"I saw him play a bunch of times and the kid's quite the talent. He really showed himself at the combine (held March 27 at the New Haven Athletic Center). You could just see his motor. The things he did on the field, sometimes kids don't bring that to the combine but he did. He had a great attitude about being there and working out and all that. It was exciting."

Murphy on Woodland safety Jack DeBiase

"I've got to see him for the last few years. He's been in our passing league in the summer. We knew what kind of talented kid he was. He has great cover skills. His coverage skills were excellent that day."

Milford Academy: a "running back factory"

LeSean McCoy.
Shonn Greene.
Marcel Shipp.

All three spent time at Milford Academy, a prep school located in New Berlin, N.Y. McCoy and Greene are current members of the NFL. Shipp played for the Arizona Cardinals from 2001-2007 and is currently on the roster of the Las Vegas Locamotives of the UFL.

Ansonia running back Montrell Dobbs, the 2010 Register All-State MVP, officially announced his decision to attend Milford Academy Saturday. Dobbs rushed for 3,445 yards and 45 touchdowns as a senior, while leading the Chargers to an 11-2 record and an appearance in the Class S state championship game.

Milford Academy is coached by Bill Chaplick, an Ansonia native. Chaplick has compiled a 97-31 record at the school through 11 seasons. Chaplick has coached 110 players who went on to play at a Division I-A college.

"We're a running back factory," Chaplick said. "We have one of the finest traditions in the country."

Chaplick believes Dobbs has the talent and potential to play at a major Division I-A school when Dobbs' time at Milford Academy is over, provided Dobbs makes the necessary adjusts both in the classroom and on the field.

"He's impressive," Chaplick said. "The one thing I didn't realize was how big he was. He's listed at 5 (feet), 10 and a half, and he'll play for me at 190 (pounds). That's normal size for a I-A back. He should fit right in. He needs to work on his body more. I think he has the lower body, he just needs to work on the upper body."

Chaplick says Milford Academy has sent an average of 14 players per year to a Division I-A school during his tenure.

"I know the program has helped a lot of players get to the next level," Dobbs said. "I felt this was the best decision for me."

Brockett, Ansonia succeed during "challenging" year

It's not a surprise that perennial state power Ansonia has again reached a state final. The Chargers will appear in their 24th championship game Saturday when Ansonia (11-1) takes on St. Joseph (9-3) for the Class S title at 7 p.m.

The Chargers are 16-7 in championship games since the inception of the CIAC playoffs in 1976.

But what is surprising is that Ansonia reached the title game with a team primarily filled with underclassmen.

Said Brockett, who's in his fifth season at the helm and has a career record of 57-6:

"I think every year is a different challenge. Obviously, my first year (2006) was a big challenge, and the second year we had a lot of kids coming back so there was a lot of pressure. Then we had to replace those kids, and we were fortunate to get to a state championship (in 2008). Every year presents different challenges.

"But, as far as talent level, this, by far, was probably my most challenging year."

On playing the state final at Rentschler Field, home of UConn football, Ansonia senior running back Montrell Dobbs said:

"Everyone's dream is to play on a field like this. It's UConn, it's the best school in Connecticut. To be playing there for a championship like this is definitely a dream come true for a player like me."
