The Joe Beler Sr. Scholarship Dinner and Comedy Show will take place on March 9 (Saturday) at 7 p.m. at Vazzano's Four Seasons (337 Kenyon St.) in Stratford.

John Romanoff, one of the top comics in New England, will perform. 

Tickets are $50 and available at the door. A full buffet dinner is included.

Beler died in 2010. Beler coached the Foran football team for five years in the late 1980s. He started the Law wrestling program in 1973 and also coached volleyball at Foran. He was also an assistant football coach at Law, Milford Academy and at Notre Dame-Fairfield under his son, Joe Beler III. Beler was an assistant under current Foran coach Jeff Bevino for nine seasons at Milford Academy.

Training and preparation:

To prepare for this season, I started lifting weights and conditioning four days a week one week after our last game. I knew that while we had struggled last season, with the returning players we had we could do something special. I held a team meeting a few days after the season and explained to my teammates that if we pushed ourselves beyond our limits during the offseason, we would see no limits on the field. I lost 40 pounds in order to make the transition to linebacker, as that was one of our team's weaknesses. I also concentrated my efforts to increase speed and agility. I have seen that hard work and discipline pay off on the field this season.

Why I have the Heart of a Giant:

Determination has helped me overcome the challenges of having two younger brothers diagnosed with autism. My brothers are unpredictable, and their attitude changes in a heartbeat. They often break down emotionally and become upset over something they can't control. The hardest part is knowing that as their older brother, there isn’t much I can do to help them. But this is why football plays such an important role in my life. Football has provided an opportunity for me to rise above the difficulties often present at home. My brothers can’t play and probably never will be able to, but I can play for them and make them proud.

Fairfield Prep's Anthony DiLeo and Holy Cross' Bryan Burnette have also been nominated.

Voting will close on Friday, December 14 and Timex and USA Football will select an

overall winner who will take home the $5,000 equipment donation for his school. This

winner will be honored on the field during the NY Giants Week 17 home game vs.

MILFORD — It’s always easier to go through a week of football practice after a victory. When it’s your first win in more than a year, it’s even better.

So you can imagine things were quite upbeat for the Law football team this past week, coming off a 28-12 win over Wilbur Cross that earned the Lawmen Register Team of the Week laurels following a vote at nhregister.com.

Law, Westhill snap losing skids

Despite falling short in a Week 1 loss to Sheehan, Law had reason to be optimistic.

The Lawmen’s attitude was different than in past seasons. More importantly, maybe, the players were buying into what Mark Robinson and his coaching staff was teaching despite being mired in a 12-game losing streak.

So it wasn’t really surprising that Law emerged victorious this past week. It seemed like it was bound to happen sooner or later.

The Lawmen earned a 28-12 victory over Wilbur Cross at home for Law’s first win since defeating Prince Tech on Nov. 18, 2010. The Lawmen lost a seesaw battle to Sheehan, 45-42, in Week 1.

Elijah Nixon scored three touchdowns on a 50-yard pass from Kevin Jones, a 63-yard touchdown run and a 74-yard interception return to lead the Hyde football team to a 41-10 Pequot Sassacus Division win over Morgan Saturday in New Haven.

Ezekial Nixon rushed for 113 yards on seven carries, including a 63-yard touchdown run, and Jones completed 7-of-12 passes for 123 yards for the Howling Wolves (2-0). Defensively for Hyde, William Burroughs had eight tackles and a sack and Donery Evans added six tackles and a sack.

Jake Ward scored the lone touchdown for Huskies (1-1) on a 5-yard run.

 Mistakes cost Hopkins in loss to St. Luke's

 

 

WEST HAVEN — While at Hamden, Tim Dube often played multiple positions, and usually excelled at all of them.

With the Green Dragons struggling through another rebuilding season, winning just one game, Dube was his team’s featured player on both sides of the ball.

Dube was the lone Hamden player selected to the all-Southern Connecticut Conference team, making it as a defensive back. Connor Falaguerra was in a similar situation at Law. Falaguerra played quarterback, running back, receiver, safety and returned punts and kickoffs. Despite his efforts, the Lawmen didn’t win a game. Falaguerra made all-SCC as a wide receiver after catching 44 passes.

Both Dube and Falaguerra will likely play integral roles for New Haven County in the 16th Hall of Fame Classic against Fairfield County tonight. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at West Haven’s Ken Strong Stadium.

It’s crossover week in the SCC, when teams from Division I compete against opponents from Division II. Below are some interesting tidbits released by SCC commissioner Al Carbone.

There are three match ups being played for the first time since the inception of the SCC in 1994 (Foran at Xavier, Law at Wilbur Cross and Hillhouse at Cheshire).
In addition, there are six games being contested for the first time in a number of years.

*Branford at Notre Dame (first meeting since 1997, a 20-0 Notre Dame win).

*Guilford at West Haven (first meeting since 1997, when West Haven won 42-7).

*East Haven at Amity (first meeting since 1999, when Amity won 21-12).

*North Haven at Hamden (first meeting since 1999, a 27-8 Hamden victory).

*Lyman Hall at Hand. Hand won the last meeting, 27-19, in 2001.

*Sheehan at Shelton. The former Housatonic League (pre-1994) and former SCC Housatonic Division (from 1994-2003) rivals meet for the first time since 2003, when Shelton emerged with a 52-7 victory.

Chris Turner ran for a 65-yard touchdown and Harold Cooper scored on a 17-yard run as the Hillhouse football team defeated North Haven 12-0 Friday night in Southern Connecticut Conference interdivision play at North Haven.

The first half was played Thursday before lightning and heavy rain postponed the second half to Friday.

Ansonia 41, Woodland 36: Elliot Chudwick threw for three touchdowns and Montrell Dobbs rushed for three touchdowns as the Chargers edged the Hawks in Naugatuck Valley League play at Beacon Falls.

Dobbs rushed for 213 yards on 35 carries. Chudwick threw for 138 yards for Ansonia (1-0). Jack DeBiase threw for 146 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns for Woodland (0-1).

Cheshire 27, Hamden 0: Quarterback Max Slade rushed for two touchdowns and added a touchdown pass to lead the visiting Rams, ranked seventh in the Register Top 10 poll, to their SCC Division I win at Hamden.

Bunnell 54, Bethel 27: Quarterback Brian Castelot completed 22 for 32 passes for 408 yards and four touchdowns to lead host Bunnell to its South-West Conference win at Stratford.

Sheehan 37, Law 30: Sheehan quarterback Bill Gannon rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown and threw for two more scores to help Sheehan hold off Law in a SCC Division II interdivision game at Wallingford.

Oxford 41, Barlow 26: Nick Donofrio scored five touchdowns to lead the Wolverines to their SWC Patriot win in Redding.

Lyman Hall 39, Platt Tech 0: Zac Falconeri rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries for Lyman Hall in a non-conference win at Wallingford.

The following SCC teams have bye weeks for the 2010-2011 season. These teams have the option of scheduling non-conference opponents for the next two seasons.

Athletic directors in the Southern Connecticut Conference recently approved several changes to the league’s football scheduling format, SCC commissioner Al Carbone confirmed Thursday.

The actual schedule has not yet been approved, but the new format will used for both the 2010 and 2011 season. The current four-division set-up will remain the same.

However, teams can now play crossover games against opponents in the three other divisions, instead of crossing over to just two divisions, as was the case in 2009.

There are nine teams who currently have an open week. Those teams have the option of scheduling non-conference opponents as part of the new two-year cycle.

Also, a team can request a division change as long as they follow proper league policy. The request will then be reviewed and voted upon by the ADs.

Carbone also confirmed that Hyde declined an invitation to join the league next season. Carbone said that since Derby defected the SCC for the Naugatuck Valley League last winter, the SCC offered invitations to Masuk, North Branford and St. Joseph. All three declined.

Chris Ballas rushed 21 times for 124 yards and three rushing touchdowns to lead the Law football teams to a 33-7 Southern Connecticut Conference interdivision win over visiting Fairfield Prep Friday at Milford.

Ballas also caught a touchdown pass from Corey Vieanneau. Nick Boyd scored on a 29-yard fumble recovery for the Lawmen (2-1).


Derby/O’Brien Tech 20, Naugatuck 14 (OT): Ray Kreiger scored on a 1-yard run in overtime to lift the visiting Red Raiders to a Naugatuck Valley League win.

D’Don Conyers scored on a 90-yard run, and Jake Tomczak scored on an 80-yard run for Derby/O’Brien Tech (2-1), which trailed 14-0 after one quarter.

Tyler Conklin and Dashawn Wingate scored rushing touchdowns for the Greyhounds (2-1).


Hyde 49, Valley Regional/Old Lyme 7: Joe Lambert scored on a 68-yard run, a 37-yard fumble recovery and a 78-yard kickoff return to lead the visiting Howling Wolves to a Pequot Conference win at Deep River.


Holy Cross 21, Ansonia 13: Ryan Kalnins returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown to seal the deal in the Crusaders’ victory at Municipal Stadium. Holy Cross is 3-0.

Montrell Dobbs scored twice for No. 5 Ansonia (2-1) — on a 73-yard run and a 45-yard interception return.
