Shoreline/SCC Lifting Competition set for Friday

Guilford High School will host a six-team weight lifting competition featuring teams from the SCC. Guilford football coach Tom Unger billed it as "the Shoreline/SCC Meet".

The event will feature Guilford, Branford, Lyman Hall, Hand, North Haven and West Haven, and is expected to begin at 3 p.m. on Friday March 8.

This is the fifth year that Unger has run the competition at the school and he hopes to expand the event in the future.

Due to the small space in the Guilford weight room, viewing by the public may be limited, although there is no admission fee.

No. 3 Ansonia wallops Wolcott to win NVL Brass Division

ANSONIA — For a few fleeing moments, the Wolcott football team seemed on the verge of making a contest out of its meeting with fellow unbeaten Ansonia despite being down by two touchdowns.

But the Chargers responded to every rally attempt, led mainly by senior Andrew Matos and junior Arkeel Newsome.

Matos and Newsome each scored three times as Ansonia, ranked third in the Register Top 10 Poll, earned a 41-12 Naugatuck Valley League Brass Division victory Friday at Jarvis Stadium.

W2L4: Lyman Hall

LYMAN HALL

Coach: Rob Marone (1st year)
League: SCC
Last season: 4-6
Top offensive players: Pete Barney, 5-10, 175, Sr., FB; Devin Cruz, 5-9, 170, Sr., HB
Top defensive players: Jared Bias, 6-0, 260, Sr., DL; Ryan Bohne, 5-9, 165, Sr., LB
Key losses: Kyle Upton, QB; Joe DeSandre, RB/LB; Connor Riordan, OL/DL
Inside the huddle: Lost its two top skill players in Upton (2,071 yards passing, 15 TDs in 2011) and DeSandre (1,086 rushing yards, 16 TDs). Replacing them may be difficult. Trojans have just seven seniors and will be young and inexperienced. The development of sophomore Kyle Smith at quarterback will be key. Smith completed 4-of-16 passes for 34 yards and an INT last season. The running backs (Barney and Cruz) saw limited time last season and they need to adjust to life on the varsity level quickly in order for Lyman Hall to be effective offensively.
See you there:Marone is in his first season as head coach. Lyman Hall opens the season on the road at East Haven on Sept. 14, 7 p.m. Marone's father, Mike, is the athletic director at East Haven.

Rob Marone named head coach at Lyman Hall

Rob Marone was unanimously approved by the Wallingford Board of Education to be the next head football coach at Lyman Hall.

Marone, who served the last four seasons as the offensive coordinator at Wilbur Cross, takes over for Chip McKeehan, who stepped down in January after 12 seasons with the Trojans. McKeehan replaced Phil Ottochian, who stepped down after 32 seasons in 1999.

"It's definitely a bit overwhelming being the next guy in line after Chip McKeehan and after coach Ottochian," said Marone, who played at Lyman Hall. "I'm definitely looking forward to giving back, and being an influence to the kids like those guys were on me."

Marone will continue his full-time position as a physical education teacher at Wilbur Cross.

"I'm happy for him," Wilbur Cross coach John Acquavita said. "It's nice for him to get a shot at this. He's going to be missed."

McKeehan steps down at Lyman Hall

It's been reported that Chip McKeehan has recently announced his retirement as head coach at Lyman Hall.

McKeehan’s been the head man for the past 12 seasons and a member of the Trojans’ staff for 26 years.

Lyman Hall went 4-6 this season, a year after the Trojans finished 8-3 and advanced to the Class M state quarterfinals. McKeehan had a career record of 54-69-1.

Awaiting a call back from McKeehan. This post will be updated.

DeSandre, Lyman Hall set to face Hand

In a 50-21 loss to Brookfield in the Class M state quarterfinals last season, Lyman Hall running back Joe DeSandre broke the school's rushing record.

After running for 96 yards in a Week 1 win over Wilby this year, DeSandre has tallied 2,823 career yards. DeSandre surpassed the 2,723 yards gained by former Trojans standout Vincent Poggio, who played in the mid-1980s and helped lead Lyman Hall to its only state title in 1985.

DeSandre is expected to be one the Trojans' top options on offense against Hand (1-0), ranked No. 5 in the Register Top 10 Poll. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field in Wallingford on Friday.

"He's a great athlete and he just has great vision, too," Lyman Hall coach Chip McKeehan said. "Take away the fact that he's a great runner, he's probably the best receiver on the team, too. As far as all-around athletic ability, he's one of the best to come out of here."

As a sophomore, DeSandre rushed 196 times for 1,191 and 12 touchdowns. Last season, DeSandre carried 164 times for 1,346 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Despite being known for operating under the I-formation under McKeehan, the Trojans have went to a more spread look this year.

"We graduated most of our (offensive) line and those were our big guys," McKeehan said. "We have a kid (senior quarterback Kyle Upton) that can throw the football. We're working on angles, trap-blocking and pulling, and what we're trying to do with Joe right now is to get him into open space and let him create."

With DeSandre, Upton, junior running back Devin Diaz and senior tight end Will Woznicki on offense, Lyman Hall feels they can make another postseason appearance.

"We made it to the playoffs last year so I have big expectations for this year," DeSandre said. "I think we can make it to the playoffs again if we work hard."

Lyman Hall players suspended

At least three Lyman Hall football players have been suspended and will not play Thursday against Sheehan in the team's final regular season game. One is senior quarterback John DeSandre, according to sources.
Lyman Hall (7-2) is battling for a Class M state playoff berth. The Trojans will clinch a spot with a victory over their rivals, but their postseason hopes could be in jeopardy with a loss.
The players were suspended after breaking team rules this past weekend which, according to sources, was a violating of the school’s substance abuse policy. The players were allegedly caught drinking.
"Some football players did break a school policy and they're being appropriately disciplined," Lyman Hall athletic director Amy Labas said. "I'm not able to say for how long (the suspension will be) or who they are."

North Haven 24, Lyman Hall 13

Sophomore Jalon White rushed 21 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns, and senior Chris Matteis gained 141 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown, for the host Indians in this SCC Division II victory at Vanacore Field.

North Haven (8-1) has won eight straight games and kept alive its Class L state playoff hopes.

Nate Alleyne added a 25-yard touchdown run for the Indians.

Zac Falconeri (nine carries, 43 yards) scored on a 2-yard run, and Joe DeSandre caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from his brother John DeSandre, for Lyman Hall (7-2), which had its seven-game winning streak snapped.

In addition, there are six games being contested for the first time in a number of years.

SCC scheduling changes

The following SCC teams have bye weeks for the 2010-2011 season. These teams have the option of scheduling non-conference opponents for the next two seasons.

Week 1 Lyman Hall
Week 2 Fairfield Prep
Week 3 Law
Week 4 Wilbur Cross
Week 5 Foran
Week 6 East Haven
Week 7 North Haven
Week 8 Sheehan
Week 9 Branford

Athletic directors in the Southern Connecticut Conference recently approved several changes to the league’s football scheduling format, SCC commissioner Al Carbone confirmed Thursday.

The actual schedule has not yet been approved, but the new format will used for both the 2010 and 2011 season. The current four-division set-up will remain the same.

However, teams can now play crossover games against opponents in the three other divisions, instead of crossing over to just two divisions, as was the case in 2009.

There are nine teams who currently have an open week. Those teams have the option of scheduling non-conference opponents as part of the new two-year cycle.

Also, a team can request a division change as long as they follow proper league policy. The request will then be reviewed and voted upon by the ADs.

Carbone also confirmed that Hyde declined an invitation to join the league next season. Carbone said that since Derby defected the SCC for the Naugatuck Valley League last winter, the SCC offered invitations to Masuk, North Branford and St. Joseph. All three declined.
