Week 5 Recap

NOTES: Hand-Xavier lived up to big billing

On a weekend when several streaks were snapped, the most noteworthy was Hand’s 40-20 victory over Xavier on Friday that ended the Falcons’ 30-game winning streak.

The meeting between Xavier and the Tigers at Palmer Field in Middletown, then ranked No. 1 and No. 3, respectively in the Register Top 10 Poll, certainly lived up to the hype.

It’s not always the case. Sometimes a game billed as a future classic can fall short of expectations. Not this one.

From the crowd — estimated at 4,500 and featuring a raucous student section — two top-notch bands and, of course, the action on the field, the atmosphere was electric.

Last week's No. 1 Xavier lost to Hand, 40-20, snapping the Falcons' 30-game winning streak.

I decided to go with Hand as the new No. 1 team, jumping the Tigers over Staples from last week's ballot. Staples, Ansonia and Windsor are all worthy candidates for No. 1, but Hand's domination over Xavier in the second half impressed me enough to give Hand the nod (for now).

New Haven hosts Governor's Cup Combine

NEW HAVEN — Hand’s Henry Foye spent Sunday afternoon throwing passes to some of the best wide receivers in the state, including Windsor’s Aaron Berardino.

The two formed quite the quarterback-receiver combination, one that could become a reality if both are selected to play in the 14th Governor’s Cup football game on June 30.

Around 150 athletes tried out during a combine at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

The game pits graduating seniors from this state against their counterparts from Rhode Island. Connecticut has won the past nine meetings, and leads the series 10-3.

“It’s really great because everybody you get to throw to is good,” Foye said. “Everybody’s the best in the state, so you know everyone’s going to run the right routes; everyone’s going to make the right cuts.”
