New Haven schools go 0-3 in Week 1
It wasn’t the type of start to the 2011 football season that the three New Haven public school programs had hoped for.
Defending Class M champion Hillhouse, favored to repeat, squandered a 13-point halftime lead to North Haven and eventually lost a 20-19 heartbreaker after Je’Vaughn Moore’s field goal attempt was blocked in the closing seconds.
Wilbur Cross and Hyde also let leads slip away in the second half.
Against Shelton, Wilbur Cross took an 18-14 advantage in the third quarter before the Gaels rallied for a 27-18 victory.
Hyde was up by eight (30-22) with 9:19 left in the third quarter against Haddam-Killingworth. The Howling Wolves, though, were shutout the remainder of the game and the Cougars went on to post a 51-30 win.
