Murphy headed to Florida

Wethersfield quarterback Tyler Murphy, a Register All-State selection this past season, recently gave Florida an oral commitment to play football for the Gators in the fall.

Murphy, who made the Register All-State team as a utility player, gave an oral commitment to Temple earlier this month, but couldn't pass up an offer from Florida, one of the nation's top college programs.

"When they called," Murphy said, "I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up."

In 2009, Murphy passed for 1, 124 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 1,213 yards and 15 scores. He also scored three times on punt returns, twice on kickoff returns and returned a blocked field goal attempt for another touchdown. He totaled 2,949 yards and 30 touchdowns.

The 5-foot-11, 170 pound Murphy visited Florida this past weekend.

"I got a call two weeks ago (from the coaching staff)," Murphy said. "They told me they were interested in me as a quarterback. We talked for a bit, I went down there and visited and they offered."

Former New London standout Jordan Reed, a quarterback who redshirted as a freshman, is also on the Gators' roster.
