Levi Jackson team announced

Playoff-bound North Haven High has placed the most players --- five ---on the 24-man Levi Jackson All-Star Team, chosen by area football coaches to be honored by the New Haven Gridiron Club.

The Jackson team is named for a former Hillhouse High and Yale football captain who became a Ford Motor Co. executive and died in December 2000. The athletes will be guests at the Gridiron Club’s annual honors night Dec. 8 at the Cascade Banquet Facility, 480 Sherman Ave., Hamden.

North Haven’s selections all play both offense and defense but were chosen in these roles: Jake Mikos, offensive line; Andrew Savenelli, defensive line; Mark Zurlis, linebacker; Jalon White, running back; and Joe Schwab, defensive back.

Also named to the squad were:

Offensive line – Rennick Bryan, Hillhouse; Kortney Leftridge, Hamden; Greg Purcell, Amity of Woodbridge; Shawn Tarnawa, East Haven.

Receivers – Tahir Manning, West Haven; Mike Washington, Hillhouse.

Quarterback – Tyler Vallie, Amity.

Running backs – Amihr Bess, Notre Dame of West Haven; Harold Cooper, Hillhouse; Ervin Phillips, West Haven.

Defensive line – Josh Delacruz, Wilbur Cross; Ludovic Richardson, Notre Dame; Tom Spencer, West Haven.

Linebackers – Mike Last, West Haven; Anthony Masucci, Notre Dame; Romaine White, Cross.

Defensive backs – Codey Ellison, Amity; Mike Shaw, Hillhouse; Malik Tinney, Notre Dame.

Selections are made from Southern Connecticut Conference teams in New Haven and adjoining communities.

East Haven receiver and linebacker Michael Vessicchio was named winner of the Gridiron Club’s Floyd Little Scholarship.

The dinner on Dec. 8, which also will honor outstanding area college players, is scheduled for 7 p.m. with a social hour at 6. Tickets, at $40 each, should be ordered by Dec. 1 by sending checks to New Haven Gridiron Club, PO Box 32, New Haven 065011. No tickets will be sold at the door.
