ND-WH's Shumaker signs with Army

From a press release by the school:

Stephen Shumaker, a key two-way lineman who helped Notre Dame to the Class L championship and the state’s top-ranking, announced Tuesday that he will continue his academic and athletic career at the United States Military Academy at West Point (Army).

Shumaker, a Milford native, made it official by signing his National Letter of Intent. Shumaker will spend 10 months at Army’s prep school, the United States Military Academy Preparatory School before enrolling at West Point. He reports to
Fort Mammoth, NJ on July 16.

A two-way player for head coach Tom Marcucci, Shumaker excelled on both sides of the line for the Green Knights, who finished the season with an 11-1 record and playoff wins over previously undefeated Conard and Pomperaug in the state playoffs.

Shumaker has also been a key contributor to the Notre Dame track program. A two-year varsity starter who earned all-State status as a junior following the spring 2009 track season, Shumaker won a second state championship this academic year by helping lead Notre Dame to the 2009-2010 Class L Indoor Track title. Shumaker finished second with a throw of 52’3.25”, which established a new school record, in the Class L Meet. He also won the shot put event at the SCC earlier this winter.

Shumaker will join an Army football program that finished 2009 one win shy of a bowl berth. The Black Knights finished 5-7 after losing to Navy 17-3 to close out the 2009season.
